2021 Skincare Trends

2021 Skincare Trends

8 minute read

Skincare 2021 is becoming complicated, but it doesnt need to be. In this blog, we talk all about the ten most popular trends and demystify them to help you simplify your skincare routine.

Gua Sha

It’s time to step up your self care and beauty routine with Gua Sha massage; A skincare trend in 2021 that has taken the beauty world and self care routines for millions of women around the world by storm. Gua Sha is an ancient Chinese practice which comes from traditional Chinese medicine. The Gua Sha technique uses a small flat tool to scrape along the face or body which is said to help release pain, muscle tension and aid with lymphatic drainage to reveal better and healthier looking skin.

Although it has been a hot topic for much of 2021, Gua Sha is not a new technique, in fact, it has been around for centuries. Its popularity has bypassed traditional uses and started to catch on to western culture over the last couple of years making it a staple self care routine.

A Gua Sha massage makes for the perfect at-home beauty treatment and it’s a great way to work out tension as well as the muscles in your face.

All you need to start your Gua Sha massage is to apply a facial oil to your skin. We recommend applying a suitable facial oil to cleansed skin, begin by applying pressure to the rounded tool and scraping away from your skin. Do this for 5 to 10 minutes every evening and after a week, you should start seeing results!

Silk Pillowcases

Chances are you haven’t thought about sleeping on a silk pillowcase before, but we are here to tell you why you should add it into your beauty routine. Good sleep quality is so important as it can affect your skin health and help reduce early signs of aging. Not to mention the benefits to your skin it can have - Are you used to waking up with drool and creases from your pillowcases indented into your face? Fear not, this trend is for you. A soft fabric like silk will cause less friction than a cotton pillowcase. We think a little bit of lux can go a long way..

Jade Rollers

This trend began in 2020 but has continued to shine with beauty enthusiasts raving about the positive skincare results from them (once done correctly!). Jade Rollers are said to help sculpt facial features and tone slackening muscles… Hello Cheekbones! Now used by people like Gwenyth Paltrow, Miranda Kerr and Kim Kardashian, it's easy to see why these ladies are still looking fabulous, cheekbones and all! You can spot a good one if it has a double sided stone. The double version usually features a smaller stone, small enough to fit in and around the undereye area.

Collagen Supplements

When Jennifer Anniston became the creative director for Vital Proteins collagen we got really excited about it. Let’s face it, we have never seen Jennifer have a bad skin day and now we know why! Collagen supplements are the latest skincare trend and lots of people are buying into it. From collagen tablets to collagen powder coffee and smoothies, there is an increasing number of ways to get your collagen fix. As we get older, our collagen depletion drops which means our skin will lose its natural plumpness and begin to sag and show its age. In an article by Vogue, on the effectiveness of collagen supplements, clinical trials have shown that daily collagen intake has the ability to slow down the body’s breakdown of its own collagen, this suggests plumper and dewy looking skin for longer.

Sheet Masks

Although they seemed to be a must have step in your routine in 2020, We vote no to these in 2021. They may not be bad for your skin but they are not great for the environment. Instead, we recommend you make your own! We have the perfect DIY sheet mask that you can make yourself. Try this DIY sheet mask recipe from Glamour Magazine:

Step 1- 1 x Muslin Cloth - Measure out holes for facial features.

Step 2 - Cut out holes for your eyes, nose and mouth just like you would find on a store bought sheet mask.

Step 3 - Now the fun part begins! Choose ingredients that are tailored to your specific skin needs. Camomile tea or rice water are great options for soothing the skin and providing healing and anti ageing properties.

Step 4 - Don’t forget to add one or two pumps of your favourite skin serum. Kinvara’s 24Hr Rosehip Face Serum has a concentrated formula that is packed with plant extracts, vitamins, antioxidants and calming ingredients.

Step 5 - If you want to take it one step further, you can also add one or two drops of tea tree oil or witch hazel for any irritated or bumpy skin.

Step 6 - Mix your personalised concoction and dip your muslin cloth in and let it soak and absorb as much of the ingredients as possible.

Step 7 - Squeeze off any excess and apply your very own sheet mask to your face. Sit back and relax for 15 minutes!

Hyaluronic Acid

Do you know why Hyaluronic Acid is such a coveted ingredient? Hyaluronic acid is a key component of our body and especially our skin, where it works to cushion, lubricate, plump and repair skin primarily through its amazing ability to hold water up to 1,000 times its own weight. This means it’s great for diminishing the appearance of fine lines and helps speed up wound healing. For all these reasons, we’ve included it in three of our products Hyaluronic Youth Boost, Active Rosehip Day Cream and our Eye Wow! Eye Serum.

Skin Minimalism

This means less makeup and more time spent on skincare each day (cough.. Here’s hoping..). We are loving this trend, especially with the warmer weather approaching, being able to show off dewy healthy looking skin is a major win! 2021 is all about embracing your true authentic self and letting your natural skin shine through. Did you know the average person spends 91/mins a week on skincare. Let the natural version of you shine or if you're not ready to go barefaced, why not swap out the foundation for a lighter BB or CC cream? We dare you!

Eco Footprint

I think we can all agree that many businesses are striving to be more eco conscious and we are here for it! In terms of sustainable ingredients, vegan friendly products, eco packaging, organic ingredients,  there are so many options for customers who want to lead with a more eco conscious footprint.  We love this trend and at Kinvara Skincare, you’ll notice that we have always had this at our core! All of our ingredients are sustainable and organically sourced where possible with sustainability being at the root of our brand values and philosophy!

Sustainable swaps: we are particularly fond of bamboo related products, particularly bamboo cotton buds, bamboo face cloths and bamboo reusable pads to replace cotton pads. Bamboo is 100% biodegradable, antifungal and antibacterial which makes it a great alternative to cotton products especially when it comes to removing your oil cleanser!

DIY treatments

For most of the past year or so we couldn't visit our beloved beauticians, so for many, we became accustomed to working on it ourselves. We waxed ourselves with sugar wax, made masks from our kitchen supplies and even took to tinting and grooming our eyebrows as well as becoming semi-professionals at doing our own nails. If you are looking for a quick and easy DIY hair mask to bring out the natural shine in your hair, we have the perfect hair treatment for you too. Try this DIY hair mask recipe from Leaf.tv:

Step 1: Start by adding half a banana, an avocado and a few chunks of melon along with four tablespoons of plain yoghurt.

Step 2: For damaged or dryer hair, break a Vitamin E capsule into the mixture.

Step 3: As you would with a smoothie, blend the mix together until there is a smooth consistency.

Step 4: Apply your mask to your head, covering your scalp.

Step 5: Leave for 30 minutes and rinse well with cool water.

(Top tip! Rinse your head outside so as to not clog your bathroom drain)

Step 6: Finish off by shampooing your hair and rinsing with cool water for extra shine!
